about David McGough

Photography is an unique vision of one singular possible perspective, frozen in light and time.

Being a relatively shy, introverted person has led to a lifetime of contemplative observation. I believe this to be my main strength as a photographer. My love of nature, travel, and activity, as well as a preoccupation with not just simply people but their history and stories, thread themselves throughout my body of work. It is a conduit through which I have the opportunity to not only tell these stories but also to tell my own personal narrative through the lens.

My fascination with photography began as a 12 year old when I was required to make a functioning pinhole camera in a middle school alternative learning program. Being in the darkroom and watching the transformation of chemicals turning paper into moments now in the past was an utterly surreal experience that left a deep impression on me. Later, as a rambling 19 year old during a summer spent hitchhiking, camping, and eventually working in Yellowstone National Park, my childhood enchantment revealed itself to be a small talent for capturing these perfect, intimate moments. Two pictures in particular, both taken with a disposable camera, convinced me that this was a passion I desired to follow. I’ve kept those prints as a reminder that photography isn’t just about having the right equipment, but more about my ability to identify with a brief flash of time in a deeply personal and connected way.

In 2012, during a trip to India centered around the Hindu festival Kumbh Mela, my pursuit of this craft came into fruition and maturity. The madness and beauty, the explosion of colors, the wildness of literally millions of people packed into such a relatively small space, and the evidence of an ancient and storied culture completely encompassed me. I was immersed in moment upon moment, and without having to pause, followed the stories of everything happening around me. That experience solidified photography not just as a passion, but as a deep-seeded drive in me to capture stories of the world in any way I can, as often as I can.

I took many winding roads to get to this place, and many years of work punctuated with hope, excitement, satisfaction, and, frankly, many times dispirited disappointment. But through it all, have always maintained my devotion to this wonderful artistic expression. I feel I have come into my own as a photographer, that I am ready to step into owning it in a more public and professional way. It is my pleasure to share my unique vision with you, and thank you for your interest.
